Read United Rittman!

On Friday May 3rd, 2019 in collaboration with Rittman City Schools, City of Rittman, Wayne County Public Library and Wayne County YMCA we hosted the 2nd Annual Reading Under the Lights event at Heritage Hall. Due to rainy weather, the event was moved indoors, but that didn't stop the young readers from showing up! In fact, close to 250 children ranging from PreK - 7th grade were on hand to pick out five books, eat dinner and read with local heroes.

This year, each family received a copy of the "One Community. One Book" titled Can I play too? by Mo Willems. Thank you to Morton Salt and Mayor Bill and First Lady Donna Robertson for sponsoring this book. First Lady Donna read the book a loud to the crowd as main characters Piggy and Elephant acted out the story.

There were six reading circles hosted by The Wayne County Public Library (with therapy dogs), Rittman businesses, Rittman churches, Rittman Fire & EMS, Rittman teachers and the City of Rittman. Families gathered to read with local heroes like Chief Don Sweigert and Mayor Bill Robertson. Many characters showed up to add to the fun! Surprise visits from Safety Pup, Fire Dog, Brutus, Slider, Elsa and Zippy added an element of excitement to the event.

An event like this couldn't happen without the generous support of local people and businesses! Thank you to all of our sponsors - United, we were able to help reduce the summer reading slide in the children of Rittman!
